Poor Performance with Windows media (many small files)

Post by SteveOxfordUK » November 20th, 2009, 1:39 pm

I am a new user evaluating SEP sesam with a view to using it to replace CA Arcserve

I am getting performance issues with simple backups of Windows 2000 SP4 server machine from SEP sesam running on SLES 10 SP1 Linux backug up to HP Storageworks Ultrium 960 tape drive.

The backup works but is aound 20 times slower than expected.

Restore is even worse. I am trying to restore to similarly configured Windows 2000 server a backup of many (360,000) small files. The first few directories were created quickly then nothing for last hour? The drive status says SMS_READ at 0.219 Gb/Hr.

Are there some things I need to be checking?

Thanks

Hy,

you can try to start a backup via command line, which looks like this (execute this command on your W2k server in bin\sesam of your Sesam installation directory:
sbc -b -s - c:\ >NUL

This command will backup c:\ and send it to NUL, so this is the fastest performance test, which is possible.

Thanks for your feedback but unfortunately I have now ceased evaluating Sesam.
