VM Backup / USB Devices

Post by mcgyver » October 4th, 2012, 4:33 pm

When backing up a virtual machine with an USB stick connected the stick gets removed from the VM when creating the ovf file.
No problem with this as afaik it's not possible to create an ovf while an USB device is attached.
Unfortunately it doesn't get reconnected after the backup has finished, it's wiped out of the configuration. Rather bad for stuff such as dongles.
Is this a bug? Should Sesam actually try to reconnect the device? Or rather a limitation of the VMware storage APIs?

Hello,

this is "work as designed". Removable devices must be reconnect manualy. May be you have connected the device to another VM in the meantime or you restore the VM to another VMWare server, where the device isn't available...

IMHO Sesam should at least try to reconnect after the backup on a "best effort" base. if the device is not available at that time throw an error and continue. but in most cases it will :-)
anayway, thanks a lot for the clarification.
