Sep Sesam Install Virtual or standard

I am getting ready to install the Sep Sesam software but I watched the short video and it sounds like it would be best to install the Sep Sesam virtual appliance on a dedicated VMware box rather than with the standard Sep Server software.

I am understanding this correctly?

And if this is true - Is the appliance software compatible with Suse Linux 11 with OES 11 as well as a Suse Linux 11 with GroupWise 2012?

I think I may have misunderstood. The appliance is a predefined installation program that is to be used on a dedicated server not a VMware - Right?
